That spirit could last only so long, though, and the Pioneers pulled away from the Bulldogs for a 44-0 victory in a nonconference football game at J.C. Campbell Stadium.
“Overall, any time we get a win, we’ll take it,” Crockett coach Hayden Chandley said. “Not our best game but we’re happy going back to Jonesborough with a ‘W.’ ”
The Pioneers (6-0) got two touchdowns in the first quarter, on a 10-yard pass from Cade Larkins to Micah Robinson and a 70-yard punt return from Donta Hackler.
Class 5A David Crockett scored again in the second quarter when linebacker Tyler Estep picked off a pass from Hampton quarterback Alex Hardin and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown and a 21-0 lead. The Pioneers pushed the advantage to 28-0 on a 69-yard Larkins-to-Hackler connection, and A.J. Boyd’s 27-yard field goal on the final play of the second quarter made it 31-0 at halftime.
The Class 2A Bulldogs (2-3) managed just 39 total yards. Lane Potter had a 53-yard kickoff return, Matt Hughes blocked a field goal and Aiden Vines recovered a fumble for Hampton’s highlights.
Larkins completed 11 of 21 passes for 237 yards and three touchdowns, the third a 5-yarder to John Kollie. Mark Seidler had four of the receptions for 90 yards. Freshman quarterback Brenden Reid scored on a 23-yard run for Crockett’s final TD.
MORRISTOWN WEST 38, CHEROKEE 35
MORRISTOWN — The Trojans survived when the Chiefs fumbled in the end zone on a fourth-and-goal and Matte Salansky recovered for a touchback.
The play came after the Chiefs had recovered a West fumble and returned the ball to the Trojans’ 9-yard line. The unexpected tight finish came after West jumped out to a 38-7 halftime lead.
Trey Courtney rallied Cherokee with three touchdown runs and Trent Price accounted for the other. Japheth Curtsinger found the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown for the Chiefs’ first score.
Zack Young had TD passes of 28 and 10 yards to Connor Patrick and a third to Jamal Spradlin. Nick Hildebrand had a 1-yard TD run and Spradlin had a 31-yard fumble recovery and return for the other Trojans touchdown.
ELIZABETHTON 35, TENNESSEE HIGH 21
ELIZABETHTON — Corey Russell accounted for five scores in the Cyclones’ nonconference win. Russell rushed for 77 yards, totaled 111 receiving yards and threw for 160 yards after replacing injured quarterback Carter Everett in the second quarter.
Russell had rushing touchdowns of 6 and 2 yards in the first half and caught a 61-yard bomb from Everett that gave Elizabethton (6-0) a 21-7 lead at halftime. In the second half, Russell hit Evan Perkins for an 18-yard TD and Parker Hughes for a 75-yard scoring strike.
Ryan Gibson scored on an 8-yard run, Cole McBrayer threw a 5-yard TD pass to Nolan Wishon and Bryce Snyder had a 5-yard TD run for Tennessee High (4-2).
GRAHAM 44, WISE CENTRAL 10
BLUEFIELD — Graham (3-1) rolled to a nondistrict win over Wise Central (1-3) behind a big night from quarterback Cameron Allen.
Allen finished the night with five total scores: three passing, two rushing. He had 331 yards through the air on 11-for-17 passing.
Central did not complete a pass and gained 212 total yards. CJ Crabtree led the Warriors with 112 yards on the ground on 21 attempts.
The G-Men racked up 445 yards.
RIDGEVIEW 49, LEE 7
BEN HUR — Behind huge nights from the two-headed monster that is Trenton Adkins and Matthew Sexton, the Wolfpack (5-0, 3-0 Mountain 7 District) rolled by the Generals (2-3, 0-1).
Sexton finished with 181 yards and two scores on only 10 carries. Adkins also had a pair of TDs and totaled 64 yards on seven attempts.
Ridgeview quarterback Tyler O'Quin was 6-for-9 through the air with 90 yards and two scores.
The Generals ran 58 plays that resulted in 279 yards of offense. Running back Blake Lewis scored Lee’s touchdown and finished with 120 yards on 13 carries.
J.I. BURTON 50, TWIN SPRINGS 0
NORTON — The Raiders (2-2, 1-0 Cumberland District) rolled to a 35-0 lead after one quarter on their way to the shutout of the Titans (0-5, 0-1).
Burton racked up 244 offensive yards. Houston Thacker was 5-of-6 passing for 118 yards and two touchdowns, to Derrick Allen and Tyrell Ingram
Mikey Culbertson rushed for a pair of touchdowns, Najee Steele scored on a 4-yard run and Esau Teasley found the end zone on a 13-yard run as well as a blocked punt that he then recovered for a score.
CASTLEWOOD 16, RYE COVE 13
CASTLEWOOD — Brue Mullins piled up 206 rushing yards on 24 carries, Jacob Vance ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns and the Blue Devils (1-4, 1-1) rallied for the Cumberland win over the Eagles (1-4, 1-1).
Rye Cove opened strong with a 56-yard touchdown run by Mason Hardin, who later scored on a 25-yard jaunt. The Eagles also sacked the quarterback in the end zone for a safety.
Mickey Carter had an interception and fumble recovery, and Shane Aesque also recovered a fumble for Castlewood.
